Why this is important

Oromo people make up the majority (about 40%) of the Ethiopian population. They live mainly in Oromia region which is one of the nine regional states in Ethiopia. In a consecutive Ethiopian regimes Oromos are always oppressed and deprived of their property and treated as a second citizen in their home land.

Recently, Ethiopian government designed a controversial integrated Addis Ababa master plan without the involvement of the public. This master plan involves expanding Addis Ababa to rural part of Oromia region, expelling local farmers from their land with little or no compensation. All these mass eviction are being done in the name of development which is not inclusive at all. So far many families have lost all their ancestral land and forced to live on the street and dying of hunger and poverty.

Since the launch of this mega project thousands of concerned Oromos (students, government workers and farmers) are protesting all over the country. During this course of pretest which start in 2014, 80 peaceful protesters were shot dead and hundreds were injured. Unknown number of protesters are also being tortured and kept in Federal government prison centers without appearing in court for single time.

In the last two weeks, Oromo students and farmers are going on the streets to demonstrate against this master plan once again. Protesters are trying to stage peaceful protest but the Government's Security Forces are using brutal force against unarmed protesters. So far 4 students were shot dead, and many more are hospitalized from injuries. The scenario is developing very fast and spreading all over the country.

Western countries like USA and UK donate a huge amount of financial aid to the Ethiopian regime. This money is also used to crush opposition parties  and to suppress media freedom in the country.

I hope you can help this people by urging and putting pressure on Ethiopian government to stop evicting Oromo farmers from their ancestral land, to stop killing peaceful Oromo protesters (students). In general, there is no democracy at all, and a lot has to be done to improve the human right situation in that country.

If the Ethiopian government is not willing to improve the current situation and continue to use excessive force and evicting Oromo farmers in the name of development, I ask the US and UK government to hold on the financial aids, until they improve the situations.

Thank you very much for considering this petition and to be a voice for this voiceless people.
Sincerely,

Alex Namarra
